In what we have
studied so far there are eight (8) parts of speech in English language
(1) Noun, (2) Pronouns (3) verbs (4) Adverbs (5) Adjectives (6)
Prepositions (7) Conjunctions (8) Interjections
We are going to start with Nouns; the first question you are to ask is
What is a Noun?
A noun is a name of a person, a name of an animal, name of a place and
name of things
In other words a noun is a name of a person, animals, places or things
Example of noun; Samuel, Lion, London and cloth
Samuel; it is a name of a person;
Lion; It is the name of an animal
London; it is a name of a place
Cloth; is the name of a thing
There are two types of noun; namely (1) Proper Nouns and (2) Common
Nouns
Proper
Nouns
Proper nouns are nouns that show the particular names of people,
Important places, and things, the always begin with Capital letters. Example;
Sir Kelvin, Doctor Victor, President Nelson, Harvest, Christmas, Easter.
Common
Nouns
Common nouns are names of set of similar things example; cloths, table,
etc.
Common nouns are divided into three groups
1.
Concrete nouns: these are what you
can see and touch e.g. yam, ball, house Etc.
2.
Abstract nouns: these are what you
cannot see or touch e.g. anger, air etc.
3.
Collective nouns: they refer to
collection (set) of things grouped together having one name e.g. luggage,
property
We also have countable and uncountable nouns
Countable Nouns: they are things we
see touch and can count them e.g. house, vehicles, books etc
Uncountable nouns: they are the
vice-vassal of countable nouns; they things we see touch but cannot count e.g.
Rice, Gerri, and Sand etc.
Now let’s go to the second part of speech which is Pronouns
WHAT IS PRONOUNS?
These are used instead of nouns to avoid clumsiness or repetition in a
sentence, e.g. Wisdom went to school today and he did his class work. In this
sentence he and his are the pronouns.
Types
of Pronouns
1.
Interrogative pronouns: these are words we
use in asking questions, at the end of the sentence we always have question
mark (?) e.g. who, whom, what, which, when, etc.
what is the matter? Who is that?
2.
Personal pronouns: the stand in the
place of names. E.g. he, she, they, her, him, them, etc
3.
Descriptive pronouns: These are pronouns
we used in describing what we say (i.e relating) e.g. each, Other, few, all,
many, etc.
many are called but few are
chosen.
4.
Relative pronouns: are used to
introduce relationship between clause and noun or pronoun. Example, what, who,
whom, that, which etc.
5.
Possessive Pronouns: These pronouns
demonstrate the noun they stand for example this, those, these, that.
6.
Reflective pronouns: These pronouns end
in self or selves and stand for this same thing or person as the object or
subject e.g. myself, himself, themselves etc
Now let’s go to the third part of speech which is verbs
What are verbs?
Verbs are action words. They indicate the actions of a noun or a
pronoun, e.g. Temple ate two plates of rice today. Here, ate is the verb.
Types
of Verbs
i.
Lexical verb: this is a verb that
shows real action e.g. jumps, run, eat, sing. A verb is singular if it carries
“s” and plural if it does not carry “s”
ii.
Anomalous Verb: This includes; has, had, has is a singular, have
plural, had is the past tense of both.
iii.
Moral Auxiliary: these are; can, shall, may, will, ought to, dare,
must, might, could, should, would had, to etc.
iv.
Primary Auxiliary verb: these are; been, be, is, was, are, were etc.
Now let’s go to the fourth part of speech which is Adverbs
WHAT IS ADVERBS?
Adverbs tell us more about
verb, Adjectives, sometimes another adverb. They can be divided into adverbs of
manner, place, degree, time, reason.
Now let’s go to the fifth part of speech which is Adjective
WHAT ARE ADJECTIVES?
Adjectives are words we use in
describing nouns or pronouns.
They make us to understand more about, what we talk about. E.g. tail,
while, high, big, low, etc.
Now let’s go to the sixth part of speech which is Preposition
WHAT ARE PREPOSITIONS?
Prepositions are words which shows
relationship between nouns or pronouns between two nouns and verb, e.g. near, decide,
in, under, with, on etc.
Now let’s go to the seventh part of speech which is Conjunction
WHAT ARE CONJUNCTIONS?
Conjunctions are words which join
similar things e.g. noun or pronoun with another noun or pronoun, an adjective
with another adjective e.g. and, but, because, if, that, etc.
Now let’s go to the eight (the last) part of speech which is
Interjections
WHAT ARE
INTERJECTIONS?
Interjections are words that help
to add stronger emphasis to an expression or emotion. They are always followed
by exclamation marks e.g. help, ah!, oh!, ha! etc
